The startups founded at Firmamento, and the projects in the works.
Two are already startups, each with its own product online. Five are in the works: projects with a field, a website and people working on them. Each one can give rise to a startup.
Startups · Customs classification
From a photo of the goods, or a two-line description, Varco finds the customs code with AI and justifies it in the words of the law: section and chapter notes, General Rules of Interpretation, precedents.
It compares each case with 122,874 binding EU rulings and 795 judgments of the Court of Justice. When the data isn't enough, it asks a question instead of guessing.
A customs operator brought the problem and joined as a shareholder. The project is led by Emanuele Giordano.

Startups · Aesthetic medicine
It uses AI to automate documentation in aesthetic medicine practices, starting with the clinical record: the medical history is dictated during the consultation, treated areas are marked on a map of the face, and the product and batch stay linked to the session.
For each procedure it prepares the consent form with that procedure's risks and alternatives: 115 already have their own template. Every change to the record is logged and cannot be rewritten.
It was founded by Pietro Garbarino, an aesthetic doctor who had the problem, and Luca Di Domenico.

In the works · Fluid dynamics
Gradient Numerics
Simulations of fluids, heat and structures for anyone with a design decision to make: hulls, wings, nozzles, electronics cooling.
Each result comes with its deviation from an experimental measurement. What to compare it with is chosen before calculating, and at the end the settings and residuals are delivered, so the calculation can be checked.
It is run by Sebastiano Raggi, a mechanical engineer.
In the works · Drones
Ostro
Fixed-wing drones built to stay over an area for whole shifts: surveying and mapping, fires and search, radio relay. The payload goes in a modular bay that takes 4 kilos, and changing it changes the mission.
The first is called Boxy: 25 kilos, a 3-metre wingspan, series hybrid propulsion. The feasibility study estimates 20 to 22 hours of flight; the next step is the first flight.
Six people from the University of Genoa's drone team work on it.
In the works · Robotics
Collimo
Machine vision software for robotic cells: it tells the robot where to grip the part and the line what to reject. The model is trained on real parts and runs inside the plant, not in the cloud.
It works for system integrators: a confidentiality agreement is signed before the drawing is opened, and the model, data and code stay with whoever commissions them.
It is still a Firmamento project and has no clients to show, so the first assessment of a case is free.
In the works · Software and AI
Backoffice.ai
AI software for repetitive office work: supplier invoices, delivery notes, bank reconciliations, contracts, expense claims, tenders.
When a figure doesn't add up, the system stops and asks a person instead of guessing. The work starts by measuring one process; the data stays in Europe and the code belongs to whoever commissions it.
It is run by Emanuele Giordano.
In the works · 3D printing
Nodo
It designs and 3D prints functional parts, from one to a few dozen: spare parts that can no longer be found, brackets, enclosures, mechanisms. It also does the electronics: circuit, firmware and wiring.
When a part has to carry a load, Nodo checks it with finite element analysis before printing and writes down how much it can take. If it then gives way under that load, Nodo redesigns and reprints it.
It is run by Giacomo Pandolfo from his workshop in Isola del Cantone.
